Am I Out Of Touch?

Ok, kids, perhaps someone can explain this to me?

I have been looking around for ways to become self employed, make some extra money, be my own boss, per say, stop the daily grind and just have some dang freedom for a change.  As I’ve been doing this, I’ve seen books and articles, (haven’t read them yet), about the so called “coming food crisis”.

Add in to this a comment made to me last week by a tourist.  The tour was over, I was collecting tips and a guy asked me to verify that I had told him the channels were fresh water.  Yes, I replied.  He wanted to know if it was sweet water.  Yes, I replied.  He responded by telling me that was good for me to know, (for me?), because did I know, I can plant and harvest rice in fresh/sweet water?  No, I was unaware of that.  He said it was good information to keep in mind for when we encounter food shortages.

Huh?

He told me it could very well happen in my lifetime.

What on earth are these people talking about?  What stinkin’ “food crisis”?  Are these more over reactionaries?  (I don’t know if that’s a word, but that’s what I call them.) Do I put them in the same category as the 2012ers?

Besides, what, exactly, do they consider “food”?  Because there is a lot to eat in the Everglades that most people don’t know about and I’m not just talking alligators and fish.  And then I started thinking, you know, I could survive out here and while it wouldn’t be all that tasty or fun, I can’t imagine I’d run out any time soon.

Further, should it ever get to the point of surviving on whatever you can find, do these people not watch, “Man vs Wild”?  No, I’m not inclined to eat a ball of insects any time soon but when you are starving, you’ll eat what you can, right?

And even further than that, if it got to the point that there really wasn’t a whole lot to eat and people started getting back to basics, if you know what I mean, and more people means less resources and everyone is starving and damn, my neighbor can be a food source, half of them are already marinated in alcohol....think, “Alive”, to get my point.  Six billion people, lots of plants, animals, bugs....are we really going to “run out of food”?

Granted, I haven’t been paying a whole lot of attention to the news lately so maybe I’ve missed something.  Maybe you can tell me what the heck these people are talking about.  What frickin’ “food crisis”?  Has the whole world gone insane?
