Happy Half Birthday To Me

I have a lot to say today so take notes!  There will be a test later!

Today is officially my six month mark of blogging.

::waits for applause and adoration to die down::

Yes.  I began blogging on April 09, 2003 in a small, cramped, unwindowed office with nothing more than a half splintered desk and a Commodore 64..........oh.....not buying it?

Ok, here’s how it really began:

It was April 08, the eve of the toppling of Saddam’s regime.  I was flipping through the news channels to get as much war coverage as I could.  I happened upon CNN and saw a very, goofy looking guy being interviewed.

“What an odd creature!”, I said to myself.  (The irony of calling this person odd while talking to myself is not lost on me...I’ll save you the trouble of commenting about it.)

I could not turn away, much like one might view a car accident or an alien visitor.  It was after all, none other than the Evil White, Puppy Blending, Hobo Bashing, BlogFather himself:

Glenn Reynolds.

He spoke of this strange word, “blog” and in a sickening display, begged for more hits on cable television by announcing his website’s address.  I looked it up and read this thing called, “blog”.

“This looks easy.  All I have to do is link to a news story and comment with, ‘Heh’ or ‘Indeed’.  I can do that!”

I began to click on some of the links on his sidebar and found myself immersed in this foreign world.  The next time I looked up, three hours had passed!  Glenn didn’t bother to warn us that, much like crack, one can become a blog addict with just one hit.  Thanks Glenn.

The following morning, after cheering and laughing my ass off at the images of Saddam’s statues being dragged all over Baghdad by “jubilant Iraqis”, I got a code from a friend and began my Dead Journal.

At first, I followed a mixture of my own writing style and Glenn Reynolds while I continued to read other blogs.  After about 2 months of this, I was itching to get a “real” site and with the help of one extremely patient and very gracious, Venomous Kate, I was up and ready within a day or two.

And here I am now.  Sometimes I check Technorati or TTLB to see where I am and who’s linking to me.  I do it because I always get surprised.  I’m surprised that anyone would link to me and my opinions at all and I’m pleasantly surprised at the level of some of the writing out there.

As I told a friend of mine the other day, I know I’ve come a long way in six months.  I love writing and used to write all the time.  Starting this blog was a way to force myself to write in public.  I’m still a bit nervous about writing in public but I’m feeling stronger about it every day.  Check me out in another 6 months at my one year.

[By the way, any and all who wish to show me their admiration and worship may click on my PayPal link or my Amazon.com Wishlist.  I’m just trying to make it easy on you.]
