I Want Your Opinion
(I have the day off so you get a couple of entries today. Hurray for you.)
And, based on your opinions, I may request your assistance.
The question is:
What do you think about tax evasion?
What I mean by that is the people who avoid paying their fare share of taxes by using sneaky little ways? I don’t mean federal income taxes, I mean property and state taxes.
As an example: This kind of stuff happens in WA state all the time. People who are residents in Oregon do not have to pay taxes on purchases so what they’ll do is move to WA but keep their Oregon resident status so they don’t a) pay the taxes in WA state, not even on products they purchase, (they show their ID and they are exempt, right there at the check out counter) and b) don’t pay vehicle taxes, road taxes, etc. The state of WA doesn’t have a state income tax BUT they make up for it by collecting tax money these other ways. So, these people from Oregon LIVE in the state of WA but do not pay their fair share. To make this really clear, they use a relative’s address or a friend’s address or something like and have that on their driver’s license as if that is their home but they actually LIVE in the state of WA. They live, work, eat, sleep, drink and exist in the state of WA but keep their Oregon driver’s license so that they can escape paying taxes. Some people rent so that it can’t be proven and some people use their “vacation” home or “summer” home that they do NOT dwell in over six months out of the year, as their ‘permanent address’ so that they don’t have to pay the taxes where they actually DO live.
So, what are your thoughts on people like this? Do you think it’s fair that some people are not paying what they owe so that the rest of us have to pay more? Do you realize that while it can be hard to prove, it IS illegal? Do you think, if you can prove it, it should be reported? And if so, to whom do you report it? We are not talking Federal income tax, we are talking state taxes. Who gets the phone call or email? What office?
If you think this is wrong and it should be reported if it can be proven, please feel free to answer those questions.
As far as my opinion on the matter? I think it’s bullshit. It’s illegal, one and two, it’s not right to skip out on your own taxes that you owe and make others pay more because you aren’t paying your share. I think it’s bullshit that people claim residence in one state even though they live in another state that has higher property and state income tax just to avoid paying that higher tax. I think it’s disgusting that they are so flippant about it, thinking they are getting over on the government when in reality, they are FUCKING all the citizens of that state because they are self centered pricks. I think, if I know that someone is doing this and I have the proof, I should report it. I just don’t know who to contact. But as soon as I do know who to contact and I have been made aware of any possible loop holes, I’m going to report it.
Because cheating your way through life and making others pay up for that is detestable. I will not stand by and watch someone do that to other people if I can do something about it.
