So, last night I had the strangest, and really, most heart wrenching dream I’ve had in a long time. I still remember one very vivid part of it that to this point, I have not been able to get out of my head. The image has replayed itself over and over in my mind throughout the day.
There was a sand colored cliff with a drop-off that was bottomless. There was a man at the top of the cliff and another, light haired man....who sometimes I was and sometimes I was next to.
The light haired man was pushed off of the cliff by some type of small army while the first man, I felt was his brother, watched in horror.
When the light haired man was first pushed off of the cliff, I was him. I looked up at the other man as I fell, in slow motion, and said goodbye.
And The Cars, “Drive” was being played from somewhere in the deep, dark chasms that had no end, no bottom. The song just filled the air all around me; coming from nowhere and at the same time, coming from my very soul.
"Who’s gonna tell you when,
It’s too late,
Who’s gonna tell you things,
Aren’t so great."
I was then myself, falling, again in slow motion, with the light haired man, watching him look up to his brother, seeing only the back of the light haired man’s head and shoulders; the wind from falling whipping his hair around.
"You cant go on, thinkin’,
Nothings’ wrong, but bye,
Who’s gonna drive you home,
tonight.?"
I then became the light haired man again and looked down and saw various ledges that I knew I would be hitting very soon as they rose up to meet us; impending doom only further agonized by the slowness of our fall .
"Who’s gonna pick you up,
When You fall?
Who’s gonna hang it up,
When you call?"
I then was outside of the light haired man again and watched him hit the first ledge.
"Who’s gonna pay attention,
To your dreams?
And who’s gonna plug their ears,
When you scream?"
I then became him again and saw myself plummet into darkness.
"Who’s gonna hold you down,
When you shake?
Who’s gonna come around,
When you break?"
And once again, I was outside of the man. I stopped falling and was hovering in place as I watched him hit another ledge, body now battered, bloody and bruised. But the man remained calm, his face almost serene as if he had learned to just accept his fate.
"You can’t go on, thinkin’,
Nothin’s wrong, but bye,
(Who’s gonna drive you)
(who’s gonna drive you)
Who’s gonna drive you home, tonight?
(who’s gonna drive you home)
Oh, you know you can’t go on, thinkin’,
Nothin’s wrong,
(Who’s gonna drive you)
(Who’s gonna drive you home)
Who’s gonna drive you home, tonight?
(bye baby)
(bye baby)
(bye baby)"
The man fell from my sight into the darkness and that is when I woke up, the song still echoing in my ears. I don’t know what the dream means really. I have some ideas but this is the first time I’ve ever heard a song in it that really went with the situation. And no, I haven’t heard that song in years. It was just pulled from the recesses of my memory. I wish I could create that image...that “movie” so that you could all see it. But at the same time, I’m glad you can’t. It was terrible enough for me as it was.
