Where Have All The Flowers Gone

I wrote not too long ago that I had planted some flowers next to my new place and even proudly displayed the photos.  About two weeks later, I was feeling that I deserved a gift so I bought some roses off of one of those stop light flower vendors who parade up and down the median while you’re sitting in traffic, waiting for the light to change.  I have never bought from them before but the guy had some white roses...so I got some.

Since those two occurrences, I have learned something.  I am no good at planting flowers in a garden, (although the other plants are doing well thus far), but I am good at keeping flowers in a pot or vase, in the house, alive for quite awhile.  (It’s all in how you cut them before putting them in the pot and what you feed them right after you have done so....plus the fact that they realize I am extraordinarily gifted and charming and want to stick around for awhile.  At least that’s what I tell myself and it works.)

So, for outside, I think I’ll stick to “other plants” and leave the flower growing to other people.  I’ll just buy those flowers and bring them home to sit in vases in my house.  Besides, flowers in the house bring a natural, calming scent that many people try to replicate from candles or sprays.  There just isn’t anything like the smell of a fresh flower arrangement to really lift your spirits...and sometimes?  They can be downright pretty.

It seems cliche but the receipt of a flower delivery when you’re laid up sick or broken, just having a bad patch in life or even for joyous occasions, really is a lot better than pretty near any other gift.  I like the ones that last for years but I’ll even take the ones that die in a few weeks because I can still take those, press them and display them again in an artful way.

Flowers are always in high demand and I don’t think it’s a business that people will lose interest in any time soon, if ever.  I just wish that I could grow the things outside in a garden.  Sigh.  I guess I can’t be an expert on everything and will have to allow others to grow and arrange them for me.
